Safety and Meaning of the Red Flag

The red flag universally indicates a "danger" situation. Its display is essential to signal various risk factors that make swimming unsafe:

Adverse weather and sea conditions: rough seas or dangerous currents.

Bathing prohibition: due to temporary pollution or sightings of dangerous marine life (e.g., sharks).

Lack of surveillance: interruption of the lifeguard service.

In many coastal areas, the red flag also prohibits the rental of boats and the organization of water sports. In extreme cases, local regulations may require the display of two red flags vertically on the same flagpole.
