The flag of Madagascar was adopted on October 14, 1958, two years before independence, while Madagascar was preparing for a referendum on its status within the French community. The flag is made up of three rectangles of the same size. One white, placed vertically on the side of the flagpole; the other two arranged horizontally on the windward side (red the one above and the green one below). The colors of the flag represent the history of Madagascar, the desire for independence, and the traditional classes. Red and white were the colors of the Kingdom of Merina, which succumbed to the French in 1896. They were used in the flag of the last monarch of Merina, Queen Ranavalona III. Such colors could indicate the ethnic origins of the Malagasy people in Southeast Asia, and are common to the Indonesian flag. Green was the color of the Hova, an important class of peasants, who played an important part in anti-French agitations and in the independence movement.
