The flag of Belize was adopted on 21 September 1981 following independence from the United Kingdom. The flag is blue with two horizontal red stripes at the ends and a white disk in the center, on which the national emblem stands out. The Belize Coat of Arms is the official heraldic symbol of the country. It consists of a tripartite shield depicting the tools of a lumberjack in the upper parts and a ship in the lower one. Behind the shield is a mahogany plant and on its sides there are two woodcutters of two different races. Under the shield a ribbon shows the motto: SUB UMBRA FLOREO (Prospero under the shade). The flag is a development of the former British Honduras flag (name with which Belize was previously known), which was established in 1950 when British Honduras began its path to independence. The two red stripes were added to the original design following the latter.
