The flag of the Volunteer Army for the Independence of Sicily, created by Antonio Canepa (known by the pseudonym Mario Turri), founded in April 1944 as a separatist armed group inside the experience of the Independence Movement Siciliano. The five yellow stripes, interspersed with four red, representing the nine provinces of the island. In the first quarter of the flag on a blue background is the triskelion (Triquetra to the Romans), the symbol of Sicily. This represents a head Gorgon, with snakes instead of hair, with two wings, superimposed on three legs bent. The association of the symbol with Sicily it is due to the particular geography of the island, characterized by three promontories, Pachino, Pelorus and Lilybaeum. Antonio Canepa was killed in Murazzu Rutto (Randazzo-Catania) 17 June 1945 in an ambush prepared by the land mafia time allied with the powers of the Italian Republic, when three quarters of the island was independent.
