The flag of Costa Rica was adopted on November 27, 1906. The state and war banner contains the national coat of arms, while the civil banner is devoid of it.
It consists of three colors arranged in five horizontal bands: two blue at the ends, one red at the center, the intermediate white. The central band has double height compared to the others. Traditionally, blue represents heaven, opportunities, idealism and perseverance. White peace, wisdom and happiness. The red symbolizes the blood shed by the martyrs of independence, and also the warmth and generosity of the Costa Rican people. In fact, the flag, the only one among the Central American banners to deviate from the traditional colors of the region, was promoted by the pro-British wife of President Castro Madriz and intended to imitate the flag of France. The coat of arms derives directly from the banner of the United Provinces of Central America of 1823. The Costa Rican flag casually resembles the Thai flag, which has the same basic design, but from which it differs for the inverted colors, the proportion between the sides and the total absence of emblems.
