The flag of the Province of Cagliari consists of two vertical bands of the same red and blue dimension with the Province emblem in the center. It was adopted by decree on March 17, 1938. The emblem is divided into four parts. On the left side there is a red cross on a silver background with four dark brown heads bandaged in the four squares. The right side is in turn divided into four parts, arranged in X, two with a red cross on a white background and two with an open tower and window surmounted by three turrets, out of the sea. The province of Cagliari was an Italian province of Sardinia. Facing south and east on the Mediterranean Sea, it bordered to the north with the provinces of Nuoro, Ogliastra and Oristano, to the west the provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano. Following the regional law n. 2 of 4 February 2016, the province was replaced by the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the new province of southern Sardinia, including the provinces of Cagliari (with the exception of the 17 municipalities of the metropolitan city), Medio Campidano and Carbonia-Iglesias. On 25 October 2016 the regional council decides to transfer the goods and the provincial staff to the new institutions of the Province of Southern Sardinia and the Metropolitan City, completely suppressing the historic Province.
