The flag of Ireland (irish flag) was established by the Constitution on December the 29th, 1937, even if it had been in use since January the 21st, 1919. It takes inspiration from the french tricolor: green the color of the Catholics, orange the color of the Protestants and white (in the middle) the color of peace and unity.

Flag for sale Ireland Flag

The national flag of Ireland often called the Irish tricolour  is the national ensign of the Republic of Ireland. The flag is a vertical tricolour of green (at the hoist), white and orange. The proportions of the flag are 1:2.

It was given as a gift from a little group of French women for Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848 and it was intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union between Roman Catholics and Protestants.

The green pale of the flag symbolises Roman Catholics, the orange represents the minority Protestants who were supporters of William of Orange, who had defeated King James IIand his predominantly Irish Catholic army at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

The white in the centre signifies a lasting peace and hope for union between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland.
