The Tonga flag is the national flag of the Kingdom of Tonga. The original design, which included only the current white canton with a red cross, was designed by King Tupou IV in 1862 to celebrate the Christianity of his people. A year later, however, Henry Dunant chose the same banner for the international organization he founded: the Red Cross. To avoid confusion, in 1864, it was decided to limit the previous design in the upper left corner, keeping the rest of the space on a red background, similar to the ancient Red Ensign. The new flag, in use since 1874, is officially recognized the following year. Its legal adoption dates back to November 4, 1875 together with the country's Constitution.
