The flag of Thuringia has two white and red horizontal stripes with the lion's coat of arms in the middle. The flag was prepared to represent Thuringia at the celebrations of October 3, 1990 in Berlin for German reunification. It is the same flag of 1945 with the only difference of the lion of the coat of arms, no longer gold but silver. However it was not confirmed. On January 30, 1991 the new symbols were decreed, declared in force retroactively from October 3, 1990. The coat of arms was the historical one of Thuringia, of blue field with the lion banded in red and silver, crowned and armed with gold. the eight stars. This appears at the center of the state flag still in use. The lion is very similar to that of Hesse (which has the enamels of the inverted bands): in fact the coat of arms of the banded lion has ancient origins (1210) and was the weapon of the langravi of Thuringia and lords of Hesse .
