The flag of Montenegro was adopted by parliament on July 13, 2004, along with a new coat of arms and a new anthem, the popular Montenegrin song Oj, svijetla majska zoro. The yellow-gold border of the drape was initially a fringe; later it became an integral part of the flag. In the flag are reintroduced some national monarchical symbols, such as the biceps eagle (of Byzantine derivation) and the passing lion, used before 1918. The eagle has on his chest the shield of the Petrovic dynasty with a golden lion passing on a light blue background in the upper part and green in the lower part, with the two parts of the shield separated by a band of gold color. The eagle has between the two heads the Crown of the Petrovic-Nejgoš dynasty and holds a scepter and a globe in its talons. With the separation from Serbia and the end of the Serbian-Montenegrin Confederation sanctioned with the proclamation of independence from the Montenegrin parliament on 3 June 2006 following the referendum of the previous May 21st, the flag became the official flag of independent Montenegro.
