The flag of the Marches, like that of many other Italian regions, made its first appearance on November 4, 1995 (day of the Armed Forces) when the president of the republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro wanted to exhibit the flags of the Italian regions in a room of the Quirinale. In the absence of a law in this regard, the flag was outlined by inserting the regional emblem (adopted by Law March 15, 1980, No. 13) on a white background. The emblem of the Marche is a stylized green woodpecker, which overlaps in part to the capital letter M, black, in the white field bordered by a green strip in the form of a shield. It was designed by Maurizio Catani and Gianni Veroli. The woodpecker was chosen because it was the totemic animal of the Picenes, which in the Iron Age lived most of the territory of today's Marche, unifying the cultures, until that time diversified.
