The flag of Greece consists of nine horizontal white and cyan stripes of equal size and a white cross in the canton at the top left. In Greek law N 851 of 1978 reference is made to the flag of the republic as formed by the white and cyan colors. The first strip starting from the top is cyan. In the upper corner on the side of the pole there is a square, also cyan, with a white Greek cross in the center. The cross symbolizes the Greek Orthodox church, representative of the Orthodox Christianity (official religion of Greece) and in particular the recognition of the Greek people towards it, for the important role played in the maintenance of the national identity during the centuries of the Ottoman domination, when the church was, fundamentally, the only means by which to learn to write and read in Greek, thanks to the so-called "hidden schools" (cryfà scholìa), real outlaw schools, in which the churchmen put their education at the service of the population. The nine strips, on the other hand, represent the nine syllables of the phrase "Freedom or death" (?λευθερ?α ? Θ?νατος - E-lef-the-rì-a i Thà-na-tos). To this interpretation another is added, where the nine strips represent the nine letters of the word ?λευθερ?α (Freedom). Finally, both colors are those of the Royal House, of Bavarian origin, ruling in Greece until 1862 [1]. More likely a reference to the blue of the sea and the sky and the white of the foam of the waves, of the clouds and the purity of the Greek soul. An influence from the flag of the United States of America can not be excluded. In the Greek language the flag assumes the double name of Galanolefki (blue-white) and Kianolefki (cyan-white).
