The so called Libyan Republic flag is the same flag of the Kingdom of Libya (1951-1969). The reign of King Idris, the first ruler of the dynasty El-Senussi adopted this flag on December 21, 1951. The green represents the Fezzan, while the red represents Tripolitania and the white growing with the white star on the black band represents the Cyrenaica (flag of the Emirate of Cyrenaica). The flag was hoisted by insurgents fighting the government for the nation against Gaddafi.
