The flag of Tuscany is inspired by the coat of arms and the banner with the silver Pegasus "inserted in a Samnite shield with red field" governed by L. R. n. 44 of May 20, 1975. The Pegasus was chosen because it was the emblem of the Tuscan Committee of National Liberation during the resistance in the years 1943-1944: the one depicted on his flag was taken from an engraving on the cover of the magazine Pegasus. The white and red colors repeat those present in the flag of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and correspond to those already adopted by Ugo di Toscana around 1000 in its emblem and used in many Tuscan historical flags (those, for example, the Florentine Republic, the Republic of Pisa and of the Republic of Lucca) and in the flags and gonfalons today in use in almost all the Tuscan cities the provincial capital: Livorno, Massa, Pistoia, Grosseto, Florence and Arezzo. This preponderance of the two white and red colors makes them in fact the oldest heraldic sign of the identity of Tuscany.
