The flag of Syria was adopted on 30 March 1980. It was also the flag of the former United Arab Republic. The first Syrian flag, after its independence obtained in 1932, was a horizontal green-white-black tricolor, with three five-pointed red stars. In 1958, Syria and Egypt formed the United Arab Republic and adopted the horizontal red-white-black tricolor with two five-pointed green stars, which is the current Syrian flag. When Syria left the RAU in 1961, it briefly returned to the old flag. The coup d'état of the Ba'th Party in 1963 led to a succession of red-white-black flags, which culminated in 1980 with the return to the design of the RAU. In the Syrian civil war now underway, the first national flag is used by the free Syrian army that opposes the forces of President Bashar al-Assad. The colors of the flag are the traditional ones of Panarabism, also found on the flags of Yemen, Egypt and Iraq. The two stars represent Egypt and Syria, the two nations that participated in the United Arab Republic.
