The Spanish flag (also known as the Rojigualda) is divided into three horizontal bands: red, yellow and red, with the yellow part twice the size of the red ones. The flags and the signs of State and war must represent the Spanish coat of arms, while the civil flag does not have it. The emblem must be placed at a position corresponding to 1/3 of the flag length starting from the pole, and must not exceed two fifths of the height of the flag height. Each of the four quadrants on the emblem represents one of the four kingdoms that were reunited to form the first true Spain in the fifteenth century, or in the order, Castile, represented by the castle, León, identified in the historical lion, Aragon, represented by the famous Senyera, and finally Navarra, recalled by the united chains. Even the ancient Moor kingdom of Granada is inserted in the bottom of the coat of arms, with a pomegranate fruit. The fleur de lys in the post placed at the center of the reigns of the kingdoms represents the royal house of the Bourbons, while the two columns on the side of the shield accompanied by the motto "plus ultra" (from the Latin, "more beyond") recall discoveries and Spanish conquests in America: the columns are in fact the mythological columns of Hercules placed on the Strait of Gibraltar, obligatory passage for the Atlantic Ocean), representing Gibraltar and Ceuta. On the column bearing the inscription "Plus" the imperial crown rests, on the other the royal column.
