The flag of Palau was adopted on 1 January 1981. The design of the national flag of Palau is very simple: a yellow-gold disk is loaded slightly off-axis towards the pole on a blue sky field. In the flag of Japan, very similar to that of the Republic of Palau for design but not for colors and centralization (the latter more similar to that of the Japanese Imperial Navy flag), the red disk represents the sun, while in the flag of the small nation oceanic the disk represents the moon; similar to the Bangladesh flag only for the red-green colors. The explanation of this choice is to be found in the history and traditions of the local population. The period when the moon is full is in fact considered the best time for any human activity: fishing, sowing, harvesting, carving the canoes; moreover, in this period the celebrations are held. The moon is seen as a symbol of tranquility, love and peace; the blue background indicates the transition from foreign domination (Spaniards, Germans and Japanese) to self-government.
