The Ohio flag was adopted in 1902 by John Eisenmann, during the first Pan-American exhibition. It is the only flag of the US states that does not have a rectangular shape, but a dovetail. The form follows the war flags used during the civil war by infantry troops. The flag is full of meanings: the blue triangle symbolizes the hills and valleys of the state; the 13 white stars on the left side represent the 13 states that started the United States, while the 4 stars on the right side symbolize the 4 states that joined the Union before Ohio. The white circle inside the triangle represents both the first letter of the state, and its nickname "" the Buckeye State "(the Buckeye is a type of chestnut tree) .The white and red bands represent the roads and waterways of the state .
