The Nevada flag has a blue background and a white star in the upper left corner, surrounded by the name of the state; above it we find a ribbon with the words "Battle born", which refer to the birth of the state, which took place during the American Civil War. Under the star there are two green branches with yellow flowers of sagebrush (or Artemisia tridentata), the symbol flower of the state. The current flag came from a design competition banned in 1926. The winning model, the work of Louis Shellback III, was submitted to some changes during the state legislature, since there was disagreement between the two branches of parliament on the position of the name "Nevada". Finally a compromise was reached and in 1929 Governor Fred B. Balzar signed the law that made this flag official. In 1989, however, a legislative historian discovered that the law sent and signed by the governor did not correspond perfectly to the compromise reached between the two parties involved. A law issued in 1991 specified that the word "Nevada" should be placed above the two branches of tridentata Artemisia.
