The flag of Montserrat was adopted on 10 April 1909. It is a Blue Ensign bearing the flag of the United Kingdom on the canton and the coat of arms of Montserrat on the windward side, modeled on many other flags of the British overseas territories. The Governor of Montserrat uses the British flag with the emblem at the center. The coat of arms of Montserrat, adopted for the first time in 1909, consists of a shield bearing the image of a woman dressed in green: she represents Erin, personification of Ireland, derived from the mythological goddess Ériu. The woman holds a golden harp, another reference to Ireland also reported on the latter's coat of arms. The cross symbolizes Christianity. The emblem intends to remember that the current inhabitants of Monserrat are descended from a group of Irish settlers exiled to the island by Oliver Cromwell in the seventeenth century. Montserrat is an island in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, in the Leeward group of islands.
