The flag of Jordan is based on the flag of the Arab uprising against the Ottoman Empire, during the First World War. The flag consists of three horizontal bands (from top to bottom, black, white and green) and a red triangle on the side of the flagpole, which has a seven-pointed white star in the center. The colors of the horizontal bands represent the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid caliphates. The red triangle represents the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt. The seven-pointed star, which is the only characteristic that distinguishes the Jordanian flag from that of the revolt, in addition to the inversion of the white band and the green, has a double meaning: indicates the seven verses of the first sura of the Koran, and also the union of the Arab peoples.
