The flag of Jamaica was adopted on 6 August 1962, the day of its independence from the West Indies Federation and the United Kingdom. The flag is composed of two yellow diagonal bands, which divide the flag into four triangles. The side triangles are black, while the other two are green. The three colors used have been chosen to remember the origins of the population and the riches of the island: yellow (or gold) for the sun, almost always present in Jamaica. Green for agriculture and lush vegetation; Black for the skin color of the population. A second interpretation is more symbolic states that the yellow (or gold) represents the sunlight and the natural richness and beauty of the country; green represents hope in the future; black represents the burdens and difficulties of the past.
