The flag of Guernsey is the flag officially adopted on 30 April 1985 by Guernsey. It consists of a cross of San Giorgio in which another golden cross is drawn. The flag was changed in 1985 because it was very similar to the English one. To avoid confusion in the official meetings, it was decided to change the flag in its current form. Guernsey is an island that is administratively a dependency of the British Crown in the English Channel, facing the northwest coasts of France. The dependence on the British Crown does not involve membership in the United Kingdom, in fact it has an autonomous government; his head of state de iure is the sovereign of the United Kingdom who, however, exercises his power as Duke of Normandy, and not as sovereign of the United Kingdom; his delegate is a lieutenant governor, who is the de facto head of state; the executive power is instead exercised by the Guernsey government chaired by the bailiff, who is in practice the prime minister of the country. As far as international relations are concerned, Guernsey is represented by the United Kingdom; even at a sports level, Guernsey athletes compete under the jurisdiction of Great Britain where the country is not recognized (for example in the Commonwealth Games, where Guernsey has its own representation), or in one of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom in the case of disciplines (for example football) in which the United Kingdom is not represented.
