The flag of Guatemala is a two-color in three vertical bands, of equal size: the central one is white and the lateral sides are blue. Traditionally the celestial symbolizes the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the white the purity of the values of the nation. In fact, the flag derived from that of the United States of Central America, with Central American colors, although the Guatemalan version places the bands vertically rather than horizontally as the original design. The central band is loaded with the emblem with the quetzal, the bird symbolizing the freedom of the Maya, and the date of September 15, 1821 which recalls the independence of Central America from Spain. There are also two rifles and two crossed swords, to remind Guatemala's readiness to defend itself with the war, but together we can see two olive branches signifying that the country still prefers peace.
