The flag of Grosseto presents the emblem of the city of Grosseto in the middle on a red background. The emblem of the City of Grosseto consists of a red Samnite shield on which there is a silver griffin and a lieutenant gripped in the right leg a silver sword. The shield is stamped with a city crown. At the beginning the coat of arms was constituted only by the griffin, mythical winged animal that recalls the culture and the origins of the citizens of Grosseto, attributable to the Etruscans and, subsequently, a symbol of the power of Christ. The symbol therefore meant both the descent of the city from the Etruscan people, which, since the seventh century BC. the ancient Roselle had settled and lived, a city that made up the remains of the Maremma chief town, and its devotion to Christianity. Later it was placed on a red background to signify the Ghibelline party they constantly followed. It is important to note how the Grosseto people wished to keep intact their coat of arms, dating back to the twelfth century, and as well as they did not want to take on any symbol or emblem that reminded of the suffered signorias.
