The Friuli flag has a golden, tongue-shaped eagle with a beak and red legs on a blue ground. The flag of Friuli is the flag of the historical region of Friuli, officially recognized by the law that protects linguistic minorities, it is exposed in the municipalities and in the Friulian-speaking provinces. At the center of it stands a golden heraldic eagle with open wings, on a blue background. The origins of the flag date back to the homeland of Friuli, the historical Friulian principality that was autonomous from 1077 to 1420, under the control of the Patriarch of Aquileia. The Heraldic Eagle, the official weapon of the Fatherland, was in the seals of the principality (like that of Marquardo di Randeck), on coins beaten by the patriarchs (such as those of Bertoldo of Andechs, Volchero, Ottobono and Bertrando) and in murals (still visible at Udine on the San Bartolomio gate in via Manin). In particular, from the eagle represented in the coins of the Patriarch Bertrando di San Genesio also takes inspiration from the emblem of the University of Udine. Some say that the figure represents a non-heraldic Griffon, but naturalistic or that derives from the noble coat of arms of the Patriarch Bertrando.
