The flag of the Faroe Islands is a red Scandinavian cross edged in blue on a white field. The official name is Merkið, which means drape or brand. according to tradition the colors would indicate the white of the icy waters of the seas that surround the islands, the blue for the sky and the red for the blood shed by the population for its independence. The flag gained popularity and a certain officiality on 25 April 1940, when the British occupation government approved it as a naval flag for the boats of the islands: on 25 April it is still celebrated as Flaggdagur ("Flag Day"). With the Home Rule Act of March 23, 1948, the flag was finally recognized by the Danish government as the national flag of the archipelago. It is interesting to note that the design of the flag is contrary to the rules of heraldry and vexillology, according to which the red color can not be placed above the blue.
