The flag of El Salvador was adopted as the state flag on the ground, September 27, 1972. Historical flag, currently obsolete Historical flag of El Salvador (1869-1875). The flag is based on the flag of the United States of Central America and consists of three horizontal bands of equal size: the central white and the blue side (traditional Central American colors). At the center of the white band stands the emblem of Salvador, in turn very similar to the original coat of arms of the United Provinces. The flag was introduced as a sign of war on May 17, 1912. Until 1972, the country used (also as a national sign, if authorized) a merchant flag with the same design, but in place of the emblem was written Dios Unión Libertad. Between 1865 and 1912, on the other hand, El Salvador later adopted three distinct flags inspired by the United States stars and stripes, with the same colors but reversed. In the front of the war flags the national coat of arms replaced the stars.
