The Delaware flag is made up of the State coat of arms within a suede-colored diamond on a light blue background. Under the diamond is the date December 7, 1787, the day when the Delaware, the first among the States of the Union, ratified the constitution. The colors of the flag are similar to those of the uniform of George Washington. Delaware is a federated state of the United States of America located on the East Coast and is part of the Mid-Atlantic States. It borders to the south and west with Maryland, to the northeast with New Jersey and to the north with Pennsylvania. The state takes its name from Thomas West, III baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and the first colonial governor of Virginia, to whom what is today called Cape Henlopen is dedicated. The Delaware is located in the northeastern part of the Delmarva peninsula, and is the second smallest state, the least populous sixth but the most densely populated sixth in the 50 United States. The Delaware is divided into three counties, which are (from north to south) New Castle, Kent and Sussex. The two southern counties are historically predominantly agricultural, while New Castle County is more industrialized. Before its coast was explored by Europeans in the 16th century, the Delaware was inhabited by several Native American groups, including the Lenape in the north and the Nanticoke in the south. It was initially colonized by the Dutch with the Zwaanendael colony, located at the present town of Lewes, in 1631. [4] Delaware was one of the thirteen colonies to participate in the American Revolution and December 7, 1787 was the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America, thus becoming known as the First State. The capital is Dover.
