The flag of the Christmas Island was unofficially adopted in 1986. It was designed by Tony Couch of Sydney, winner of a competition for the creation of a flag for the territory. It was officially adopted on the day of Australia Day on January 26, 2002. The flag is divided diagonally into two parts green and blue. In the blue half there is the Southern Cross represented with five white stars of which four with seven points and one smaller with five. In the green half a golden native bird (Phaethon lepturus). At the center of the flag is a golden circle with the shape of the island in green. The blue represents the sea that surrounds the island, the green represents the vegetation of the island and the island itself. The southern cross represents the link with Australia and the position of the island in the southern hemisphere. The yellow of the central disk represents the historical phosphate mines of the island.
The Christmas Island (in English Christmas Island) is a small island belonging politically to Australia and located in the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia.
