The flag of Chile is formed by two horizontal bands of equal size, the upper one is white and the lower one is red; on the white band, on the side of the shaft, there is a blue square with a white five-pointed star inside. The first version was a horizontal tricolor blue, white and red, but in 1854 the design was modified in two white and red horizontal bands, with the blue canton containing a white star. The protocol states that the flag can be hoisted horizontally or vertically, but the star must always be in the upper left corner. Red represents the blood of the patriots who died for the conquest of freedom; White represents the snow of the Andes; Blue represents the blue of the sky and the sea (Pacific Ocean). The white star is a symbol of progress and indicates the strong will of the Chilean people. It was adopted in 1817 during the struggle for independence from Spain.
