The flag of the Central African Republic was adopted on 1 December 1958. It is composed of four horizontal bands in blue, white, green and yellow (starting from the top), and a red vertical band running across the flag at half the length. On the horizontal blue band, on the side of the flagpole, there is a yellow five-pointed star. The flag was designed by Barthélemy Boganda, the first president of the autonomous territory of Oubangoui-Chari, who was convinced that "France and Africa should march together". For this he combined the red, white and blue of the French tricolor and the pan-African colors (red, yellow and green). The red symbolizes the blood of the people, paid to obtain independence, and who is willing to pay to protect the nation. Blue represents heaven and freedom. White represents peace and dignity. Green symbolizes hope and faith. Finally, yellow represents tolerance. Between 1976 and 1979, following the transformation in the monarchical sense of the state desired by Jean-Bedel Bokassa, the flag, without any modification, was the banner of the Central African Empire.
