The flag of Carrara consists of a blue background with a golden wheel in the center with the inscription FORTITUDO MEAN IN ROTA. Carrara is an Italian municipality in the province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany. It is the most important center in the world for the extraction and processing of the famous Carrara marble, a very precious white marble that is extracted from the nearby Apuan Alps. The emblem of the city is a wheel with the motto Fortitudo mea in rota (from the Latin for "My strength is in the wheel"). This emblem was considered the representation of the cart wheel with which the marbles were transported. In reality it is nothing but the symbol taken of the Celtic god Taranis who has always been represented with the lightning in one hand and in the other a wheel with six or eight spokes. Taranis or Toranos, assimilated to Jupiter, is the tutelary deity of the storms from which the Apuan quarrymen had to protect themselves and from which the town of Torano (Carrara) was derived. With Massa, in the period between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, it constituted the Duchy of Massa and Carrara. On 12 January 2007 the city of Carrara was awarded the gold medal for civil merit for the contribution given between 1943 and 1945 to the Liberation struggle by the Nazi-fascism.
