The flag is made up of two horizontal bands: the upper one, red, has twice the width compared to the lower one, green. On the side of the pole there is a white vertical band bearing in red a traditional Belarusian decoration, which, in 2012, underwent a slight modification through the removal of the white side bands. The flag, therefore, is similar to that used by the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, that is when it was part of the Soviet Union. The red flag indicates the blood shed by the defenders of Belarus, while the green symbolizes the forests of the country. The current Belarusian flag was adopted on 7 June 1995 following a disputed referendum held by President Aleksandr Lukashenko to replace a previous design that had been used since independence from the Soviet Union. The differences compared to the R.S.S. Belorussian are given by the absence of the hammer and sickle and by the inversion of colors (between white and red) in the design of the traditional band and in its background. Compared to the flag used from 1995 to 2012, another difference was represented by the absence of the two vertical lines on the bands on the sides of the traditional motif. Since 2012, the sidebands have been completely removed and the traditional Belarusian motif has gone to occupy the entire ornamental range.
