The flag of Bangladesh was adopted on January 13, 1972. The flag is made up of a red disk in a green field. The disc is close to the auction so that when the flag flies, the disk seems to be in the middle. During 1971, and during the liberation war, a similar flag was used, the difference consisted of the Bangladesh map, which was positioned above the red sun. The map was later removed from the flag, probably to maintain a simple design. The flag resembles the flag of Japan, except for the green field instead of white. The red disk represents the sun rising above Bengal. The color also symbolizes the blood shed by those who died for the independence of Bangladesh. The green field does not represent Islam, but the lush land of Bangladesh. The civil naval, military and aeronautical flags are based respectively on the Red Ensign, the White Ensign and the British Royal Air Force flag. In Bengali, the flag is known as Lala-sabuja ("the red and green").
