The flag of Australia is blue, with the United Kingdom flag (Union Jack) in the headquarters and a large seven-pointed white star (representing the seven Australian states) in the lower left quadrant. The right half bears a representation of the constellation of the Southern Cross, in white, with a small five-pointed star and four larger seven-pointed stars. The flag was proclaimed by King Edward VII in 1904, after a drawing contest (for which the rules provided that the British flag was still present). This flag was intended primarily for naval use. During the first fifty years of the Australian colony Union Jack was widely used, as well as the "Red Ensign", same design but with a red background. Only in 1954 became the official flag of Australia but it had to wait until the seventies for this to completely replace the Union Jack in public consciousness; although the Union Jack still has real value in the presence of the Sovereign or in special commemorations. The flag is among the national symbols of Australia.
