The flag of the city of L'Aquila consists of two vertical green and black bands with a silver shield in the center representing a black eagle surmounted by a crown. Under the crown is the PHS trigram and on its left and right the inscription Immota Manet. The shield is Samnite and the eagle is from Swabia. The symbols in the city's coat of arms are linked to the history of its foundation in the 13th century. L'Aquila in fact was founded by the union according to the legend of 99 villages, for economic and political reasons. According to legend, the eagle was chosen as a symbol because at the time of the foundation of the city appeared an eagle with a white veil on its beak. The eagle is also a tribute to the House of Swabia, while the white and red colors of the emblem on one side could recall the symbolism of the Church or be a symbol of independence. Over time changes were made to the colors and shapes of the coat of arms, up to the current one which is much more similar to the original one at the coat of arms of the House of Swabia. After the earthquake of 1703, black and green were chosen as civic colors, as a sign of mourning and hope.
