Antigua belongs to the State of Antigua and Barbuda and is an island located in the Lesser Antilles. The highest peak is the Boggy Peak, about 400 meters. The name of the island is inspired by the church of Seville Santa Maria La Antigua and the island was christened by Christopher Columbus in 1943. The island was an English colony from 1632 to 1981, the year in which the declaration of independence was approved and the state of Antigua was created in Barbuda thanks to the union of the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda.
The flag of the State of Antigua and Barbuda was adopted in February 1967. The flag designer was Reginald Samuels, a school teacher. The flag consists of three triangles. Two red rectangle triangles on the right and left and an equilateral triangle in the center. The latter is divided into three horizontal bands, white, blue, black from the tip to the base of the triangle. Within the black band is a rising yellow sun. The sun is the symbol of the birth of a new era. The black represents the African population, the blue the hope and the red the dynamic character of the inhabitants of the islands. The colors yellow (sun), blue and white can also mean the sun, the sea, the sand.
