The Republic of Anguilla is in the Caribbean and is located within the Lesser Antilles and is the most northerly of the northern islands. It is an English territory of overseas that includes 5 islands, of which Anguilla is the main island. The flag of Anguilla was adopted on May 30, 1990, ten years after the establishment of the colony. In 1967 the first flag of the island was built during the period of the revolution. In 1967 the flag was present two variants of the flag. One was red with the name of the island written in yellow. In the center, on a blue background, two mermaids and a shell were depicted. The other was purple with the image of two mermaids in the blue background but without any writing. These two variants of the flag were not much loved by the inhabitants and when the independent republic of Anguilla was proclaimed a blue and white flag was drawn and used with three dolphins in the center, which was considered by many to be the true national flag, although Anguilla had not officially its own flag. This was made official on May 30, 1990. It is a blue flag with on the right the shield with the three dolphins and on the left a Union Jack, according to the drawings sent to England by the governor and approved by the Queen.
