The flag of Andorra is made up of three vertical blue, yellow and red bands with the national emblem in the middle of the yellow band and is the official flag of the Principality of Andorra, a very small state of south-western Europe, in the eastern Pyrenees, between France and Spain. It has an area of ??only 468 km2 and is the sixth smallest nation in Europe. The Principality was created in 1278 and ruled together by the bishop of the Spanish diocese of Urgell and the president of the French Republic.
The flag of Andorra was adopted from 1866 using the French flag model but changing the colors, in order to use those representative of Spain and Catalonia. The emblem at the center of the flag recalls the two princes and protectors of the principality: the bishop of Urgel and Count Foix.
Before this flag, between 1806 and 1866, the Principality's flag was bicolor, yellow and red. Then he presented the colors of Catalonia. Andorra in fact is culturally included in Catalonia even if it includes the county of Foix, in French territory. When France abolished the counties in the flag, a blue band was inserted to commemorate the French flag and membership. The bands were originally arranged horizontally and only in 1938 was the vertical arrangement decided. In 1971 the coat of arms was modified so that the flag had the current design.
