The flag has a yellow cross on a red background in the center. The city of Ancona is located in the Marche on the Adriatic Sea built on a promontory in the shape of a bent elbow. The city's origins date back to 387 BC. when the Greeks of Syracuse arrived there. Just the elbow shape of the promontory gave the name to the new city: ?γκ?ν, "Ankón", in Greek means elbow and the Greek origins have given rise to the appellative 'Doric city' of Ancona. The shape of the promontory has created the largest natural harbor of the central Adriatic Sea and Ancona is in fact one of the major Italian ports. Ancona is a city with 2400 years of history, is one of the most important economic centers of the Marche region and the city is rich in monuments, art and history.
