The flag features on a red background a double-headed eagle in black. The current national flag of Albania was officially adopted on April 7, 1992 and is said to have been the flag of Skanderbeg (George Castriota or George Kastrioti), an Albanian Christian and a Turkish general, the national hero of Albania, whose helmet is shown on Byzantine two-headed eagle, the State emblem. Albanians call their country Shapiperia, meaning "Land of the Eagle." On 1443 Skanderbeg raised his flag over the fortress of Krujë in defiance of the Turks, resisting the forces of the Ottoman Empire. Independence from Ottoman rule was finally proclaimed on 1912. Various Albanian regimes have used the red flag with the double-headed black eagle.
