The Afghanistan flag began to be used in 2002 but was formalized in early 2004. The official design is three equal length vertical vertical stripes black (hoist side), red, and green, with the national emblem in white in the middle. The embleme represents a mosque with pulpit and flags on either side. , below the mosque are numerals for the solar year 1298 (1919 in the Gregorian calendar). The emblem then reports the year of Afghan independence from the UK. The black, used in numerous past versions of the flag, symbolizes the past of Nation, the years in which Afghanistan was an occupied country. The red speak about the blood shed to free the State from England in the 19th century. Green is the colour of hope and Islam. The National Emblem in the middle of flag is a mosque (to represent the main religion in the country). Inside the mosque there is a Mehrab with a prayer mat facing Mecca. The Mihrab is a niche that show the direction of qibla, the direction to pray. The mosque is circled by a sheaves of wheat with an Arabic inscription of Muslim creed: The Shahada, the first part of the five most important pillars of Islam. Below are the words "Allah Akbar" ("God is great"). Below the mosque there is a scroll where is written Afghanistan. Afghanistan had more changes to its national flag in the 20th century.
